Author J.Q. Rose returns to The Plain with an exciting new middle grade project called Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women. The tag line sums it up nicely: Inspiring and empowering girls to achieve success in their dream careers.

J.Q. will be giving away several prizes at the end of her blog tour for Girls Succeed, including a $10 Amazon gift certificate and a copy of the Girls Succeed e-book, so be sure to leave a comment! And now, I’ll turn the show over to J.Q.

Thank you, Pat, for hosting me today so I can shout from the rooftops about this inspiring e-book for middle grade girls, Girls Succeed: Stories Behind the Careers of Successful Women. I imagine after this book tour my throat will be raw from shouting, or maybe my fingers will be raw from typing?

Hello Readers. I’m excited to visit with you today. Please leave comments to enter a random drawing for prizes after the tour is completed. More information about that later.

Girls Succeed is an interactive e-book filled with stories of fifteen remarkable women. It is not a dry accounting of their careers, but an exploration of how they chose the path to success in their chosen occupation. Some, like girls who will be reading the book, knew when they were growing up they dreamed of being a doctor, a horsewoman, an athlete, a writer, or horticulturalist. Others, specifically a chef, an entrepreneur, and semi-truck driver, discovered success in their careers later in life. But the one key component in each of their stories is their passion.

It is my hope these stories will be a GPS for girls. (I would say compass, however, kids these days may not know what a compass is!) A GPS guides us to our destination and I believe these wonderful role models in the book will demonstrate the character needed to work hard to achieve dreams. Reading about successful women can inspire and empower girls to pursue the passion within them. After all, GPS could stand for Girls Path to Success.

When I envisioned this project in 2006, I designed it to include resources for girls to learn more about careers which interested them. Not only did I want to include books, magazines, and articles, I also wanted to include live links to web sites on the Internet with updated information just a click away for the reader. Unfortunately I was a bit ahead of my time…!! Now my dream has come true to include live links in the e-book, so the reader has access to loads of resources for them to learn all about the woman interviewed and her career.

At the end of each chapter I include the highlights of the person’s career and a section for more information. It’s easier to show you than tell you. Hmm…show vs. tell. That sounds familiar.

There is a chapter entitled Cooking up a Career after the interview with Sue Chef, a creative cook and dynamic personality. Of course, I chose to share a chapter about cooking on Pat’s blog!

Sue has shared two of her delicious, easy-to-make recipes from her Live Smart: ADHD booklet. Enjoy!

Homemade Trail Mix
Combine ¼ cup unsweetened apricots, ¼ cup dried cherries (unsweetened), ¼ cup almonds, ¼ cup walnuts, ¼ cup roasted whole kernel pumpkin seed, and 5 cups Multi-Grain Cheerios. Serves 5

Sue says you can choose your favorite nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and whole grain cereal to create your own special blend of homemade trail mix.

Mango Berry Smoothie
In food processor, combine ½ cup water or milk, ½ cup frozen mango, ½ cup frozen raspberries, 2 oz tofu, 1 tsp honey

  2. Sounds like a true GPS for young ladies. You know that old saying, "We've come a long way, baby." And women have. Women now have the power to make their own choices, and I for one am happy about that fact.

I hope your book inspires many of our young women. Kudos JQ.
